What Italy lacks.

‘Nuff said. Espresso and cappuccinos are good and all but man, some days I want to be able to run through a drive through and grab a large coffee to go while I drive around. I mean, the cup is smaller than a dixie cup, where would I put it?? (No seriously, tiny cups…I’ll get a picture soon and show you. Ridiculously small.)

(Please excuse the Christmas-y themed cup/bag, I took this last November on our drive from CA to VA. And ignore the donut bag, I really want you to focus on the huge cup of good old coffee. Cream, no sugar, please.)

What a day.

Today was fun indeed. Goose was off today to make up for being SDO this weekend so we decided it was time to brave downtown. Plus, I was running low on my liquid crack (read: Nespresso capsules) and there’s a boutique somewhere downtown. So we made it a mission to go find it, how bad could it be? I mean, really – it’s just down the highway and off the tangenziale, we can DO this!

So we get in the newly fixed VW Golf and get going. (Sidebar: turns out the Golf needed a new distributor coil and a few new spark plugs. $350 later and it runs better than before.) Things are great until we get to our exit from the Tang (that’s the local, cool kid slang by the way. Okay not really, everyone just calls it The Tang) and get in line to pay our 0.85€ toll. Then, we exit the booth (bypassing the gypsy, thankyouverymuch) and we hit traffic. Not exactly sure what was going on, we just kept going with the flow. At one point, I counted 7 cars across. There were only 5 toll booths. Yeah, no idea. Turns out those 5 (7?) lanes were narrowing down to ONE lane. Which went through a tunnel. And then stopped at a red light on the other side. Wonder what genius designed THAT exit.

Then the fun part. Oh yes, you read that right. The fun hasn’t even started yet. We now have to get through town, find somewhere to park (hadn’t even considered that! Good thing we drove the small car!), and then find the boutique. One of the roads was an incline and Goose is apparently not exactly….adept at driving a manual transmission on an incline. Cue impromptu lesson of How To Use The E-Brake When Driving On A Hill, Part 1. Since it’s still stop and go traffic and we’re still on an incline, parts 2 and 3 follow quickly in succession.

Then comes the part where Goose almost manages to hit the car BEHIND us because apparently our lane was ending and he couldn’t get the car to engage in gear quickly enough to keep from rolling backwards AND merge at the same time. Cue Necessary Chinese Fire Drill: Downtown Napoli Edition. That’s right folks, we swapped seats so yours truly could take over. Toss in a few awkward waves and smiles and having to restart the car because someone *cough*Goose*cough* was so flustered he stalled the car out to boot and we were on our merry way. A few mishaps with the GPS and missed roundabout exits but we finally found our destination. Now to find parking. Luckily, we stumbled upon a small parking area for 3€/hour. Nice!

We walked through the streets of Naples, bypassing the emergency first aid happening on the sidewalk, with a chair borrowed from the laundromat, of course, and the ambulance parked on the sidewalk, back to the town’s pedestrian shopping zone.

First stop: local cafe. No trip is complete without the requisite tasting of the local cafe and pastry! Two cappuccinos, a cornetto, and a turnover later, we exit into the now rainy and dreary outside. Quite different than the sunny and cheery Naples that we were in only 10 minutes sooner but who’s paying attention?

Next: Operation Find Nespresso Boutique begins. Armed with a vague address (86/100 Via Scarlatti), we start looking. Find building 100 and find out that it’s kind of a department store with boutiques inside. Think Bloomingdale’s or some sort of comparable US store. Objective accomplished! As a bonus, the store also happens to be the home to the MAC boutique for here, nifty! Everything is way, way overpriced though. I think I’ll just stock up when I head back stateside later this year. ;) So we buy coffee, get a free coffee and biscuit, I spend 15 minutes explaining to Goose that when I said “no, it’s a biscuit. You know, like a cookie?” I really meant food, not a coffee flavor and that no, there really isn’t an almond biscuit flavored coffee and that the biscuit he just ate? That was what was in the other box he was asking about.

Time to go but wait! Is that….? No way! It can’t be! Hey look! It’s George Clooney!

See? The man himself! Clearly Goose was excited. Oh and please excuse his day glow jacket, he apparently feels it makes him more visible to the Neapolitan drivers or something silly like that. Shortly after this was taken, I got yelled at for taking pictures so we high tailed it back out into the rain and headed back towards the car.

We made it home fairly safe and it was homemade pizza night, woohoo! I bought the dough premade (yes, I’m lazy, what’s your point?) at Auchan and had all the fixings for a regular pepperoni pizza. Well, Goose may or may not have ended up with a calzone instead of a pizza because his stuck to the prep board…Mental note: more corn meal! All in all, not a bad way to spend a free, random weekday off I’d say.

lazy sunday

It’s Sunday and as we enjoyed our cafes this morning, we realized that some of our favorites are running low. So, we’re looking to get some more capsules for my Nespresso machine and we found an “authorized retailer” for Nespresso online. We thought,

“Hey we have nothing better to do – let’s go check it out! And get more coffee!”

We find our way over there (totally guessed the right way on the highway too – yeah!) and Media World is closed for lunch. So, with an hour to spare, we decide to go to Ikea.

O.M.G. The crush of humanity was INSANE. Oddly enough the parking lot had TONS of space when we arrived so we parked and strolled in. Went looking for computer desks (found one, will go back later) and then ended up in kitchen wares and found some jars! Problem! I don’t know how to buy stuff from Ikea in Italy! D got yelled at for removing the jars from the display so we gave up and kept walking. We ended up in a warehouse type place where hey look! The jars!

Load up on jars, get in line, pay, and walk outside to see that the entire population of Naples has converged on Ikea. No parking spaces left and we had a guy literally get out of a car and follow us to our truck to save the spot for his friend.

Of course, D’s spacial awareness seems to be lacking and he proved that brilliantly today. Not realizing that there was a huge crowd of people and that I had nowhere else to go, he continued to push the cart and me along until I was cornered resulting in a mini panic attack on my part. Nice.

Note to self – avoid Ikea on weekend days!

Lifeblood of the Navy…and Me.

Sludge, mud, java, moka, espresso, cafe, or whatever else you want to call it, coffee is king. Don’t believe me? Go visit a ready room on a Navy vessel and check out the coffee mugs hanging around – if there are any not in use, that is. Odds are, they’ll be unwashed and very well loved. Apparently the less you wash it, the better. I’m not gutsy enough to take part in that tradition, I’ll stick to putting my cups in the dishwasher after using it. I like the shiny porcelain that shines back at me when I grab a cup from the cabinet thankyouverymuch.

I have a confession to make, I may have a slight problem when it comes to coffee. Just a slight one, I promise! I have – you ready for it? – three, yes, three, different coffee makers. Each one has it’s own purpose thought so it’s totally legit! Shall I explain?

1. Mr. Coffee
This is my work horse, my trusty standard. Alas, it is only 110v so I only use it rarely. If I am feeling the need for more than one cup or if D is partaking in the life blood then I will fire her up, grind up some beans (Dunkin’ Donuts, please!!), and wait.

2. Senseo
Meet my basic, every day machine. It’s perfect, I can pop in 2 pods and get a perfectly acceptable cup of coffee. I went with the Senseo over any of the other single serve machines because it’s 220v and the pods are the commissary. I don’t care for flavored coffee or anything, I’m more of a straight up Colombian coffee girl so it’s perfect. I use this in the mornings when it’s just me and pup hanging out.

3. Nespresso Le Cube
This is my baby. Pricey, fancy, and oh so pretty. I have wanted one of these machines for a long, long time but I just couldn’t justify the cost or the necessity for one. In fact, I wanted to put one on my Christmas list a few years ago but someone *cough*D*cough* told me that it was not a suitable item for a Christmas wish list and I stupidly listened to him. So when I saw one of these on clearance at Sur la Table last year, I asked a few questions. Turned out to be the only one left so not only was it on clearance, because it was the display, I got an additional discount on top of it AND I got the Aeroccino frother for free too. They tossed in a bunch of random, loose pods and sent me on my merry way. It did not come with manuals or anything of the sort so I called Nespresso and quickly found myself on the receiving end of some of THE best customer service I have ever encountered.

I called and explained that I bought the display machine but that it came with basically nothing. The rep was incredibly helpful and in short time, I found myself with a registered machine and manuals en route. Imagine my surprise when I received a box from UPS a few days later that had not just the manuals but a start set of capsules AND a welcome kit comprising of yet MORE capsules and both an espresso and lungo glass cups. Very, very impressive.

Since we live in Italy, everything here is cafe style, a la mode #3. So even though my machine is 110v, I will pull it out more frequently than Mr Coffee because it’s more in line with what is drunk here. When in Rome, do as the Romans, right? Well, Naples is only 2 hours away from there so close enough. :)

See? Each machine has its’ own reason and purpose and all are loved, no one collects dust for too long. Although, I’m not saying if someone created an IV drip of coffee that I wouldn’t be in line for one. A girl’s gotta have her coffee, any way will do. :)
